george orwell • 1949 • fiction, dystopian/ orwell's classic was first introduced to me in my freshman year of high school in 2007. i have a vivid memory of my teacher asking us what we thought of the ending, and i answered that i thought the ending of the book was "stupid", as i thought it was much too fatalistic to be taken seriously. i remember standing up in my seat and proclaiming that winston was weak to have given into the state, not understanding at the time that my rage was founded, in essence, on the tragedy that orwell's genius had painted as his ending. now, i see that this ending was necessary, if not inevitable, like all endings and all moments before, between, and beyond them. the grim fictions of this book, sadly, manifest in countless ways in today's world with government-sanctioned self-surveillance being just one of orwell's many prophecies.
